I have done nearly 9 hours this week which is probably my biggest week so far this year. Five and a half on the bike, three and a half on the run, which leaves how much in the pool… Let me just work it out… Oh that’s right, none
One of the things I’m finding in this block is that I’m actually enjoying keeping the run quite pacey. My usual training plod pace is around 5mins/km, but over the last few weeks I have been trotting round a fair bit at 4m30 and sometimes even at 4m15 pace. Just feels right at the mo. I guess training is partly about giving the body new physiological challenges, so maybe that’s why it feels like it’s helping. No niggles or twinges at the mo but am being vigilant
With Cots looming, have now done several 2h+ rides at 230W and several longish runs at better than 4m30 pace… just not on the same day. Putting them together is an unknown
So plan for this Wednesday is 2h bike at 230W straight into 1h run at 14kmh which is 4m15 pace. Think that will be my last long brick.
And after reading about poor old Matt’s fall I think I’m going to constrain the TT bike to Zwift now. Roads round here just feel too dodgy to train on a TT bike, with my rudimentary handling skills, when also trying to hold a target power. I also had a scary moment a few weeks ago when I hit something in the road going full pelt down a steep hill (at 76kmh said Garmin). Didn’t fall, but my elbows bounced off their rests into the bare bars and I had a hell of a fright.
And just need to remember how to swim. Not too late is it?
Don’t know if it’s me or the roads, but felt really battered out on the TT today. Not just the few sections of potholes which you know to avoid, but sections of road resurfaced with really rough top that just rattle everything. My arm rest and bottle cage had rattled lose by the end of the ride.
Maybe it’s always been like that and Zwift has just spoilt me. But holding TT on Zwift and on the road are totally different as you don’t have to worry about the front bouncing on Zwift. Shoulders aching after tide today.
Ha, yeah, I realise that sounds odd. But basically a 1.5km downhill near me at 10% average gradient in a straight line, it’s possible to go down like a rocket. Think the bloke who has Strava KOM hit 90+ kmh.
Middle aged hobbiest like me should never have been down on the tribars at 70+ on a training ride. Rush of blood to the head due to trying to maintain av watts and speed. Just not worth the risk.
Sorry, wasn’t calling you out. I’m exactly the same. I’m comfortable maxing out a road bike downhill but a TT bike, aero and a hill scares the bejeebus out of me
I picked this post because to reply to but could be anything. I do tend to be quite stubborn about getting stuff done but my body is less than optimal.
However, I only post these screen shots as a bit of a laugh. The true masters of insanity for this stuff are the likes of @tunster@p00key@jeffb@gingerbongo and some others I’ve failed to mention probably.
Do you remember EJ (Endorphine Junkie -
Tim Piggott) from TT1.0?
Anyways…,my training.
Swim.
2km, 1:36/100m
Tired, less than optimal pacing
400 pull warm up
200 finger paddles
100IM
6 x 50 (45s)
200 pull and finger paddles
5 x 100 (1:30 - terrible pacing, see image)
200 pull cool down
100 mixed very easy
I got back in the pool after a 4 week break. Lost all of my speed again. Flailing around for 1.55m/100 when I was cruising at 1.50 before the break. Got to cram some swimming in over the next 2 weeks now!
Looks like I have a lunch opportunity. Don’t know what I fancy doing though! So now I’ll waste the next half an hour on this call trying to decide, and inevitably still not deciding come 12!
5km run today. Just took it real easy and ran according to how my lungs were feeling. Pace was so slow and HR was so high, but I think that’s to be expected post Covid. Did some strength work afterwards…
Foundation Training 12 mins back workout
Foundation Training 8-point plank 8x20s
4x15 Dumbbell deadlifts 7.5kg
4x15 RDL with dumbbells 7.5kg
3x10 Step-ups each leg
5x20 squats, 40 scissor jumps
3x10 dumbbell upright rows 5kg
3x10 dumbbell military press 5kg
3x5 iron cross 2kg
Tried to do some pull-ups at the end, stupid really, but I managed 4 mungo pull-ups!!
Anyway, I feel good. Lungs could be better, but they always take longer to heal. I’ve decided to go on my little trip next week to the Alps. Really looking forward to it now
It was just unexpected after wearing a long sleeved t-shirt and gilet to walk to swimming and then the dog this morning.
Then the house being cold all day, plus the awful weekend.
