Virtual Zwift Rides

He’s only ridden 20.9km too

Did an effort up the Alpe yday - set off aiming to be just under the new FTP of 273 and ended up doing 268 for the climb, which yielded a 50:01 time, so a big improvement, and still have the carrot of trying to break 50 at some point in the future.

Managed the effort OK - in retrospect I drifted off power about 2/3 of the way up but had a bit left for the final hairpins so probably that calculated FTP wasn’t too off the mark.

Afterwards I watched the ZPro series also up the Alpe - shame AB had a power dropout halfway up as he and Lionel were having a battle royale - think Lionel would’ve been tough to beat as he was still pushing over > 6w/kg all the way it looked like.

In fact (I know it’s not 2 weeks into a Grand Tour at the end of a long stage) but from the feed it looked like he was putting out Froome-esque numbers: https://www.cyclist.co.uk/news/319/team-sky-release-chris-froome-s-power-data#:~:text=Chris%20Froome%20says%20that%20his,6.08-6.17w%2Fkg.

Be interesting to see what his average was for the whole climb (35mins), but his 20min power was 6.1!

I often find I can ride the second half harder, as I’m simply not warmed-up enough early on the climb (if I just ride the route).

who on earth is Kenneth Vandendriessche?! That was an impressive ride.

I guess this will forever be the achilles heel of these events.

I can’t understand how a Pro would suffer a power drop out?
Although, judging by the ABSOLUTE SHACK AB is Zwifting in, I’m surprised the broadband makes it through those walls

I think he still has the corrugated tin roof on it, too - hahaha (see the GCN Triathletes Vs. Cyclists video to see what I’m on about)

haha, yeah it’s not quite the same as Frodo’s flashy minimalist gaff and balcony is it?!

They’re probably still on dial up in yorkshire aren’t they? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Must nip over to ST to see if last night has resulted in them declaring Lionel the winner of the next 5 Kona’s, the Tokyo Olympic road race, the hour record holder and the inventor of a vaccine for Covid…

You forgot curing cancer.

No, need to hack in. Details in a post higher up (post c1894)

Absolutely goosed now!
Only managed 5 routes for 61.1km today.

The Harrogate course annoyed me a bit…

…no Betty’s on the Harlow Carr Road, all of sudden you’re on the Chevin, but without going through Otley?
The Abbey - is it Rievaulx or Bolton?

Also…did the London Loop, not sure Box Hill is in Southwark!

I know it’s not Rouvy and is just a simulation, but it’s irksome.

What would be more irksome is having to ride through all the shitty suburbs that I have to IRL to get to nicer roads like Box and Leith. The approach taken on London is a smart one.

They could’ve split it into separate worlds?
Or done like a “bonus” pack of the good bits?

I know you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
I don’t notice these things in NYC, Innsbruck or Watopia.

That’s exactly what zwifters hate. As you then just can’t navigate around various different bits and connect parts of the world that you want to ride as you choose. Take Bologna. You can only do it as part of a race. Hence I’ve never done it, as it doesn’t appeal to me as something to race on. Yet if that same profile of terrain was built within Watopia, then I’d have certainly ridden as part of a longer ride.

Mapping out courses as if in real life, so they can then overlay the GPS plot on the real world streets, like central London, Richmond, Paris, etc, looks good the first time, but once you realise you’re only ever going to ride the Paris routes as a longer crit style race to Crit City, then it kind of loses it’s appeal

Cheers, that makes sense.

What’s the reason for not being able to choose a spawn point?
Endless descents of the Alpe springs to mind! :see_no_evil:

I quite like the physcology of the spawn points - makes it more of a community feel which I think is one of their overriding goals.

Difficult to describe but you get in and I always wonder about where people are going, how long they’re riding for etc. I think Watopia Downtown is the best one, since people split off into lots of different routes from there so there’s more of a mystery as to what they might be doing.

Yeah no Betty’s but the course is pretty accurate. There’s no Chevin on the course, as you head out of town you go past Harlow Carr RHS to Beckwithshaw, then Pot Bank before heading back into town. 2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit (Banner to Banner) | Strava Virtual Ride Segment in Harrogate, England, United Kingdom

Otley was part of the UCI tour but it never made it to Zwift.

I was on my bike in Harrogate last week. After a trip to the Specialized store I started going the wrong way down a one way street (hey Limmy!). I was thinking I’d like to see how my IRL vs Zwift times compared so set off on my way :see_no_evil: Used to work in Harrogate years ago so I know the road well = brain fart :dash:
