Outlaw 2019

3:22 is a good time! Must have been hard to keep your head in the game, especially as the wheels started coming off after 20M?

Never mind the 12-16km “cross country” course on the tow path (3-4km out, then back)
Just puddles, mud and grit.
I slipped and fell at 18m and thought I’d tore my hamstring. Then couldn’t run much after that.
My own fault for careering through puddles I couldn’t see the bottom of.

Also…

…it was warm and dry from 4am-5:55am.
The heavens opened when we got into the water.

Agree with Poet it was definitely the right call.
They say the decision was made about 20 minutes before the first swimmer came in

Quite funny really we were unknowingly swimming together as we both came out in 1:10.

I was a touch confused for a moment when the volunteers stopped me running up the swim exit!

Marathon was fairly tough too, pissed it down for portions of it and the mudbath towpath was proper grim dodging puddles, mud, nettles and waiting to pass people

Oh no…the poor 4%s ;)…will they be going back?

Well…I got these from Bike.de

So I’d need to order a pair from Nike, send the used ones back to Nike, then the new ones from Nike back to Bike.de.

Which is fraud. So no

I think it would have been better to make the call to cancel the bike before the swim & then stagger the swim rather than have people standing around.
The call to cancel the 112 mile bike leg was correct as it would have resulted in lots of competitors & volunteers getting very cold
The forecast though was known & it may have been better to have had a ‘what if plan’ beforehand & had a shorter bike course.

Not when I’m running 81 for a half and 37 for 10km.
Loads of people managed a sub3…but I notice they all have low numbers, so may have set off on a less congested course?

Also, I only managed four gels, loads of water and 4 cups of Coke.

For the 113 half, I managed a gel. One gel.

For the Wilmslow Half Marathon, all I had was water.

I need to up my “moving buffet” game

You haven’t been training for a stand-alone marathon and had a swim and a 3hr hang around beforehand, not ideal prep…so I would say my compliment stands :stuck_out_tongue:.

So did they
David Bishop did well in his first ever marathon.

It made it to BBC News:

Flooding shuts roads and rail lines https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-49143717

I ate a pizza on a 3h30m turbo session yesterday. I can stuff my gut with almost anything when exercising, but it took practice. Race highlight was a warm bacon sandwich on an ultra last year.

Fun training at least…

Oh dear. Really sorry to hear about the changes. That sucks for everyone. Unfortunately you cannot influence mother nature, but you can use some common sense as alluded to by Stenard!

This is really unlucky, especially given the hot weather in the lead up. However, in these situations, its the organisers who are the hardest hit, not only have they spent months getting ready, they now face a huge challenge to pursuade people to come back next year. It must have been a really tough call for them to make, but sounds like there wasn’t much choice.

I’m there :see_no_evil:
On the way back, on the car phone to my wife, she said “Well, you’ll have to go back and finish it next year” :tipping_hand_man:t4:
The ease of this (for me) is ridiculous.

The “new” (2015?) Run course up to suspension bridge and round Victoria Embankment was also more enjoyable.

From Outlaw Twitter:

“Course was signed off as safe at 0530. Then the rain arrived at 0610 and caused flooding, then more rain…”

That tweet is bollox - the roads were flooded on Saturday afternoon, it wasn’t the result of 40 minutes of light drizzle on Sunday morning! Of course it was the correct decision to cancel but OSB don’t need to try and suggest it was a tough call.

Totally gutted for you all. Spend months and months putting in the hours and then the weather Gods show their cards. Sounds pretty horrendous but well done to all those that did the Aquathlon.

Yeah I’d enter again. Will be interesting to see what Iain Hamilton and the team say.
Looking on a IMJ style Outlaw Facebook group yesterday Simon Ward was pretty vocal about them exploring every available opportunity to get some sort of bike route in place. I think the issue was that the road that links the lake to the north/southern loop was completely submerged hence their decision. Bit gutted to lose my strongest discipline but to be honest I was almost slightly relieved to not have to go and spend 6 hours or so in the pissing rain!!

Top tip I think from @Jorgan about packing a gabba/perfetto style jersey. Wore mine on the marathon and think Poet did too. I stupidly wore mine under my Castelli speed suit top though (as it was completely soaked) and the zip has chafed on my stomach awfully!!

Also on that Outlaw fb group someone had got an Outlaw tattoo on Thursday with the distances under the logo and is now livid :rofl:

Why would anyone get any tattoo done 3 days before going in (an extension of) the Trent. Half the ITU field were ill last year after the relays and the swim was cancelled this year.
